The
JobsNow “12 in 6” program is an initiative of Gov.
Beverly Perdue. This training is geared to help workers quickly
(training programs offered over a six month period) learn new
skills and re-enter the job market in positions where there are
employment needs to be filled.
Funding
for this initiative is supported by the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Department of Commerce, Division
of Workforce Development and the local Workforce Development Board.
JobsNow
is a partnership between Guilford Technical Community College
and the Guilford County Job Link System.
What
is the process to participate in this program?
•
Step One: Individuals interested in the welding
training must complete an online “Workforce Investment
Act (WIA)” interest application (see link at bottom
of this page).
• Step Two: After submitting an online
application, you will be scheduled to attend an information session
at the Guilford JobLink Career Center (Greensboro or High Point).
• Step Three: Individuals must meet the
testing requirements and WIA eligibility criteria for workers
who have been laid-off, dislocated, unemployed and under-employed.
•
Step Four: Individuals meeting the above criteria
will be assigned to work with a WIA Career Developer and receive
case management services. Financial assistance will be provided
to cover the cost of training.

Industrial
Maintenance certificate (announced Janauary 27)
Prerequisites:
High School Diploma or GED
Must have experience with basic hand tools
Must pass all assessments administered by JobLink/WIA Services
(testing basic skills)
Must meet the eligibility criteria for WIA Services for laid-off,
dislocated and under-employed workers.
In order to earn an Industrial Maintenance certificate, student
will be required to successfully complete all of the following
courses:
Courses: Module 1: Course Code ISC 3138
Module 2: Course Code ISC 3138A
HRD: Workplace Competency – 24 Hours
Career Readiness Certificate Orientation – 3 Hours
Start date April 19, 2010
This course will teach the student basic fundamentals
of industrial maintenance theory as well as equipment and tool
usage. Upon completion, the student will have had classroom and
hands-on experience in industrial maintenance including troubleshooting,
tool usage, and measuring devices. Topics include electricity/electronics,
pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanical and assembly print reading,
bench work, basic machining, industrial safety, and Green maintenance
basics.
Medical Administrative Assistant (announced Janauary
27)
Prerequisites:
High School Diploma or GED
Must have basic computer skills, including keyboard skills of
45 wpm.
Must pass all assessments administered by JobLink/WIA Services
(testing basic skills)
Must meet the eligibility criteria for WIA Services for laid-off,
dislocated and under-employed workers.

In order to earn a Medical Administrative Assistant certificate,
student will be required to successfully complete the following
courses:
Courses: Module 1: Medical Receptionist – 130 Hours
Module 2: Electronic Medical Records – 90 Hours
Module 3: Health Insurance Billing and Coding – 150 Hours
HRD: Workplace Competency – 24 Hours
Career Readiness Certificate Orientation – 3 Hours
Course is scheduled to begin in late May or early June.

Module 1 – Medical Receptionist
Course Description:
This training has been developed to prepare an individual to work
as an entry-level, first line position in medical offices and
allied health facilities. The training will include, but not limited
to reception techniques; medical office simulation; medical ethics
and legal responsibilities; medical terminology; medical filing;
patient and coworker interaction; patient records; office maintenance
and management; daily financial responsibilities; health insurance
filing; health insurance coding and billing overview; written
and oral communication; safety and emergency care; understanding
medical orders; reception techniques; HIPAA; employability skills
of teamwork, responsibility, communication, problem-solving, information
processing, and adaptability; and the importance of appropriate
dress, proper hygiene, and grooming skills in the workplace.
Module 2 – Electronic Medical Records
Course Description:
This training has been developed to prepare an individual to work
in an entry level position in the health information management
field. Students will study medical terminology in addition to
topics such as electronic filing and retrieval of records, record
processing, records assembly and analysis, dealing with physicians
to take care of the incomplete records, and confidentiality and
release of information. The students will receive training in
the use of Microsoft Windows and the Internet.
Module 3 – Health Insurance Billing and Coding
Course Description:
This training is designed to prepare an individual to work in
an entry level position as an entry level Billing Clerk. This
training will include but not be limited to: Roles and Responsibilities
of the Health Insurance Clerk, What is Health Insurance, Managed
Health Care, Life Cycle of an insurance claim, Legal and regulatory
considerations, introduction to ICD-9-CM Coding, CPT Coding, HCPCS
Coding, CMS Reimbursement Issues, Coding for Medical Necessities,
CMS-1500 Claim Instructions, Filing commercial claims, Blue Cross
and Blue Shield Plans, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Workers’
Compensation, Medical Terminology, Records Technology, HIPAA;
and employability skills of teamwork, responsibility, communication,
problem-solving, information processing, and adaptability; and
the importance of appropriate dress, proper hygiene, and grooming
skills in the workplace.
